Editor’s note: This article was originally published on 10 November 2021 and reports on the Virtuoso Symposium held in Vienna that year. It was editorially revised in August 2026 for language, structure and terminology. All event and network figures identified as 2021 data refer to the information available at the time.
In October 2021, Vienna became a meeting place for leading voices in luxury and experiential travel. More than 300 international delegates gathered for the Virtuoso Symposium to exchange ideas, strengthen relationships and discuss the future of the industry.
For Vienna, this was more than an international business event. The city holds a special place in Virtuoso’s history and offered an exceptional setting in which culture, hospitality and personal connections could come together.
Why Vienna holds a special place in Virtuoso’s history
Virtuoso announced its new name in Vienna in January 2000. Twenty-one years later, the network returned to the Austrian capital for its anniversary symposium, held from 27 to 31 October 2021 on the initiative of the Vienna Tourist Board and the Austrian National Tourist Office.
Virtuoso in 2021: At the time of the Vienna Symposium, the network reported annual sales of US$30 billion, more than 20,000 luxury travel advisors in over 50 countries and approximately 2,200 partners. Austria was represented by twelve partner hotels—seven of them in Vienna—and two local tour operators. These figures document the network as it was presented in 2021 and are not intended as current 2026 statistics.
The return highlighted a relationship shaped by a shared appreciation for culture, outstanding hospitality and meaningful travel experiences. Vienna presented itself not simply as a backdrop, but as an integral part of the programme.
The Virtuoso Symposium 2021
The annual Virtuoso Symposium brings together leaders from Member agencies and executives from the network’s Partner companies. Alongside strategic meetings and discussions, the programme creates time for personal exchange—the foundation on which many exceptional travel experiences are built.
In Vienna, meetings took place in distinguished locations including the Musikverein and Schönbrunn Palace. Evening events introduced delegates to the Spanish Riding School and the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Each setting offered a different perspective on the city’s history, artistry and contemporary luxury.
Ideas, relationships and the future of luxury travel
The working sessions focused on trends, challenges and opportunities within the international travel industry. Just as important were the conversations between agency leaders, travel advisors, hoteliers, cruise companies, destination specialists and other partners.
These relationships are central to the Virtuoso model. Travel agencies participate in the network as Virtuoso Members, while hotels, cruise lines, tour operators and destinations are represented as Virtuoso Partners. By working closely together, they can create more personal journeys, provide privileged access and arrange benefits that may not be available through a standard booking channel.
Our personal experience in Vienna
For In Travel Solutions, the symposium was an opportunity to meet valued partners, gain first-hand destination knowledge and experience Vienna from a new perspective. We stayed at the Park Hyatt Vienna, a Virtuoso Partner hotel in the historic centre, and were particularly impressed by its architecture, location and Arany Spa.
First-hand experience and trusted international contacts are an essential part of our work. They help us recommend not only a destination or hotel, but the combination that genuinely suits each traveller.
